Having recently explored the captivating beauty of Pelee Island, I can confidently say that this hidden gem in Lake Erie is a destination that should not be missed.
Pelee Island covers an area of approximately 42 square kilometers (16 square miles) and is situated about 15 kilometers (9 miles) off the southern coast of mainland Canada. It is part of Essex County in the province of Ontario.
The island has a close-knit community of approximately 300 year-round residents. The island’s population increases during the summer months as tourists and seasonal residents visit to enjoy the island’s natural beauty and recreational activities.
Pelee Island has a rich history that dates back thousands of years. The island is traditionally the territory of the Indigenous peoples, including the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee nations, who have inhabited the area for generations.
Pelee Island is renowned for its vineyards and wineries because of its unique microclimate, created by the warming effects of Lake Erie, which allows for the successful cultivation of grapes. Pelee Island Winery, established in 1979, is the oldest and largest estate winery in Canada.
As the southernmost inhabited point in Canada, Pelee Island offers a unique blend of natural wonders, peaceful surroundings, and a laid-back island atmosphere.

One of the most breathtaking experiences I had on Pelee Island was visiting the Fish Point Nature Reserve. As I strolled along the sandy paths, surrounded by lush wetlands and scenic overlooks, tranquility washed over me.
I delighted in observing the diverse bird species that call this reserve their home, from elegant herons to vibrant warblers.

2. Cycle Through Scenic Vineyards
Pelee Island is renowned for its wineries, and what better way to explore them than by embarking on a scenic bicycle tour? Home to over 700 acres of farmland in Canada’s warmest grape-growing region, a visit to one of the vineyards should definitely be on your list.
Pedaling through the island’s picturesque landscapes, I found myself immersed in vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see.
The gentle breeze carried the tantalizing scent of grapes, while the vibrant colors of the vineyards created a captivating backdrop.
Make sure to stop at a winery along the way to sample their renowned wines, crafted with passion and care!
3. Bask in Sunsets at West Dock
During my time on the island, I discovered a hidden spot that quickly became my go-to for witnessing stunning sunsets: West Dock.
As the sun descended below the horizon, the sky transformed into a breathtaking canvas of fiery oranges, soft pinks, and deep purples.
Sitting on the dock, feeling the gentle waves lapping against its edges, I was filled with a sense of awe and gratitude for nature’s artistry.
This is an experience that will forever hold a special place in my heart!
4. Connect with Local History at Pelee Island Heritage Centre
To truly understand the island’s rich history and culture, a visit to the Pelee Island Heritage Centre is a must. This center aims to preserve, interpret, and celebrate the unique heritage of Pelee Island.
The island served as a safe haven for escaped African Americans seeking freedom in Canada during the 19th century.
The exhibits provide insights into the island’s involvement in the Underground Railroad network and the courageous individuals who aided freedom seekers.
As I explored the exhibits, I immersed myself in the captivating stories of the island’s past, from its Indigenous heritage to its role in the Underground Railroad.
5. Unwind on East Beach
Pelee Island’s East Beach holds a special allure, with its pristine sands and crystal-clear waters inviting visitors to unwind and embrace the island’s laid-back vibe.
I spent blissful hours strolling along the shore, collecting colorful seashells and feeling the warm sand between my toes.
Make sure you visit the island during the summer to experience the crystal clear waters, as the color of the water changes in other seasons.
